Don't call it a bossa-hip-hop-lounge-dub-voodoo-electronic-guitar thing because Sideways is primarily a collection of great songs. A trans-hemispherical collaboration between Phase 5's Round Trip Mars Records and the Different Drummer label, this collection has been produced by NZ artists from start to finish.

"There is currently a wealth of creative talent coming out of New Zealand, and over the last year or two producers seem to have brushed up on their technical expertise too. For a country steeped in dub tradition, the idea of a link up with Different Drummer makes sense, and much respected ex-pat radio DJ Stinky Jim has compiled as lively a cross section as one could hope for, with styles ranging from lounge to pure electronica. Highlights include the deep, melodica-infused dub from International Observer (Tom Bailey from The Thompson Twins, no less), Sola Rosa's haunting 'Hi Five' and best of all, the compulsive acousto-shuffle of Phelps and Munro's 'Horse Winning Without Rider'. A sound that can't be pinned down easily, but still possesses a unique spirit. Above all, a sense of chilled joie-de-vivre prevails, which is totally in keeping with this hugely under-rated country. 4/5"
