Skinny Girl Diet and Ethical Debating Society—two of the coolest, smartest, weirdest new bands in all of London—on a split 7", two songs per side? You bet we're excited. Hell, HHBTM is jaw-dropped, shocked and honored that we get to release the first non-compilation thing for both these bands.

Skinny Girl Diet are three school-age women who sound like their having the time of their lives. They've spent the last year tearing London apart with their blazing raucous guitar-driven music (too chaotic, too free to be punk—too fiery, too direct to be pop). After a mention last month in The Guardian, this could be the beginning of great things. Or it could all end tomorrow. That's what it means to be young, and what it means to be free. SKG's music hits harder and goes deeper than a bunch of 30-year-old women in black heels and red lipstick could ever hope to. SKG oozes spontaneity, passion, and fun. It doesn't evoke the past—it evokes the feeling of being young and alive right this very second. SKG don't hide behind their art, behind their costumes, their tired plans for world domination. SKG doesn't give a shit about any of that. They just want to have a good time and scream their lungs out in the process. The screams don't sound like any old man's cherished rock icons; it just sounds like a scream—the depth and terror of which hasn't been heard in rock since Black Francis. SKG greet the world with the proper amount of derision. A 'Skinny Girl Diet' is a real thing; it actually exists. A high-exercise/low-calorie regimen of self-torture, designed to turn every woman's surging curvy body back into the thin hiplessness of pre-pubescence. This band is smart, engaged with the world around them and driven by wit and passion.

Ethical Debating Society is every bit as fierce, every bit as engaged as their buddies on the flip-side. Call and response boy/girl vocals and the best use of the word 'creosote' (we'd give you the definition, but since you're so goddamned smart you probably don't need it) in the history of music. EDS sound like they could be SKG's older siblings—wiser and cannier, skulking around corners and planning their next move while SKG goes charging off into the night. They ask more questions. They look for answers. They shout 'Come on!' like they're inviting you to join them, or like they can't believe the stupid shit coming out of your mouth. Maybe it's both. Play this single over and over again, debating which band is better, as your ears/eyes/wigs get blown further and further back with each listen. These bands are so cool we don't deserve to put this out. If you're one of those people complaining about smooth, airbrushed, inoffensive, wussed-out indie, you need to get this single right now or stop your damn bitching.
