Soundscape Box 1

A 7 track ambient album (47m 44s) — released October 20th 2014 on Tranquillo

Perry Frank started to record Soundscape Box in May 2013, when he began to work on his project RUINS and REGRETS. The project is closely linked to the "video-documentary-clip" called Ruins + Regrets that is a collection of all the abandoned villages of the mining past around the town of Iglesias in Sardinia.

There are many stories about all these abandoned villages, stories about the ghosts that haunt the ruins of the old houses and in some cases Perry had a strange feeling while filming inside those houses. All the scenes are filmed without motion, while other particulars of the landscape such as trees and clouds are moved, shaken or pushed by the Mistral wind to symbolize that the passing of time can do nothing when a regret is living inside our minds. All the ruins stand for the regrets of what has been and what will never be because of human fragility.

The songs RUINS and REGRETS, that open and close the album, were written as soundtrack for the project.Perry Frank used his Fender Stratocaster guitar and a Jaguar with some gears such as POG2 and MemoryMan of Electroharmonix, FLASHBACK X4 Delay of TC Electronic, and DD20 of Roland Boss, with other effect pedals and an Orange Amplifier in all the tracks of Soundscape Box I.

In Ruins and Regrets Perry played even a MicroKorg as soundscape in all the track and some Piano notes in Regrets. The backward guitar at the end of the song symbolizes the regrets coming from the past.

THE DAWNING was written and completed in June 2013, even if the song in an embryonal version was played live since January 2013. The acoustic part was played in June 2013 with the slide guitar overdubs and combined with the other soundscape parts.

BARCELONA LANDSCAPE was written in December 2013, during a trip in Barcelona. The idea of the song came when Perry was at Montjuic Castle, where there's a fantastic view of all the city until the harbour and the promenade. It consists in two arpeggiated melodies played in the same time by a Jaguar guitar and a Stratocaster, over a soundscape of POG2 with some MicroKorg and piano notes.

ENDLESS SHORELINE is an experiment made with the AM Radio white noise united with some acoustic chords and slide melodies. The song was written in March 2014 and completed with the soundscapes and the cicadas sounds in May 2014.

ETERNITE' PAR LES ASTRES was written during the first part of the work for Ruins + Regrets video-documentary-clip, but soon became something different. The title of the song is taken from Louis Auguste Blanqui's masterpiece: L'Eternite par les Astres. In his work, Blanqui analyzes the possibility of the existence of infinite parallel dimensions that necessarily lead to the idea of an infinite number of our doubles that repeat or vary our actions everyday. The song features some guitar soundscapes over a background of Microkorg and some Keyboards sounds. The main theme is played on a stratocaster guitar with an Ebow and many delay effects.

LE VENT ET LES NUAGES, is a simply ambient song that features some POG2 soundscapes and ambient swells on some piano notes and slide guitar melodies. The song is slow and light as a breeze in a summer day.

The closing track of the album is REGRETS, that brings the listener back to the begininng theme, played in a more delicate way, without Microkorg, only guitar ambient swells and piano notes with many reverbs.

All the ambience and nature sounds where recorded with a ZOOM H2n in June 2014. The theme of the album is the absence of memories, the vagueness of time and the impossibility to change the past and come back to live another life. In the present time remain only regrets, like a ruin of what will never be or what has never been.

The title SOUNDSCAPE BOX I came naturally to Perry Frank after listening to the finished complete work.
