Mekhanist delivers delicately built lo-fi beats combined with subtle melodies played on harmonica, acoustic guitar, vibes and flute and the outcome is heartbreakingly beautiful. Hailing from Tampere, Helsinki, his background includes in addition to his own musical productions also experimentations on 8-bit sounds and photography. A 100% do-it-yourself man, he writes, produces and plays all instruments on his tracks, plus sings the vocals. A refugee from the club scene, he is a rare sight on bars, clubs and nightspots. Rather, he likes to stay home, watch the kids tv together with the girlfriend and their cats. The first single off the album, 'Whistle While Work', was well received by a range of people, all the way from LTJ Bukem and the jazz fraternity, to being one of the highlights of the Stereo Deluxe compilation COMING HOME 02 alongside Quantic and Koop. The singles, however, only give a glimpse of this release which most importantly is A PROPER ALBUM and needs to be heard from start to finish. Described by Rob Da Bank (Radio One, Sunday Best) as 'One of the best leftfield LPs this year', the album debut by the 20-something Mekhanist (Tomi Niemi) is set to successfully complement nine2five's artist roster, already featuring such talensts as DharmaOne (the producer of last years massive broken beat anthem 'Belong') and Infekto (responsible for the Gilles Peterson fave 'Left Hand Jazz'). ROB DA BANK: One of the best leftfield albums this year. DOM SERVINI (Straight No Chaser Magazine): A PROPER ALBUM with great range of styles. Very good! NIK WESTON: Too many good tracks. A well rounded quality effort. Very good album. MATT LISLE (Perverted Sciene / Groovetech): The best contemporary album I've heard in a long time. LTJ BUKEM: 'Liked the Whistle (While Work) thang when I first heard it! ENNIO STYLES: (Stylin, Australia) 'Fantastic - deep cinematic beats with a haunting presence.' JOHN KONG: (Do Right Music, Movement, Canada) Good! Nice downtempo bizniz NICK LUSCOMBE (XFM): Brilliant. Like it very much!'
