Somewhere in the past Niko Ryhanen has been working on his Aphilas project releasing mellow and soulful downtempo gems on the US label Merck. Now, his solo project Kaino is a step forward. He has a wide range of influences which are anything from Boards of Canada, Pink Floyd to Premier and Madlib, so no wonder the songs on his debut EP are infused with a beautiful melancholy feel. But somewhere in the mix they also include something for the dancefloor, a variety of slick soul and excellent use of jazz & latin samples. Standout tracks on the EP include "Where's The One", an epic where DJ Shadow meets Billie Holiday on the beach with Chris Rea (!!), "Heatbelt", a classic slice of dancefloor friendly latin funk & house, and a remix of "Conductor" by Jon Kennedy (Grand Central, Tru Thoughts). Look out for the KAINO remix of Track N Field's "Something in the Air", also soon out on nine2five.
