Nos Phillipe

A 3 track experimental album (50m 42s) — released January 25th 2010 on Black Atlas

East London outfit Nos Phillipe (Robert Hopps and Jonathan Webb) use processed field recordings with electroacoustic improvisations generated by guitar, turntables, FX's and bowed springs and cymbals. Formed in late 2004 the pair's recorded output to date consists of one self released limited edition CD-R and an EP ('Shh... Camille') released on Mark Wastell's Confront Collector's Series label in January 2008. The group have also shared live billing with the likes of Oren Ambarchi, Evan Parker, Sudden Infant, Han Bennink, Max Eastley, Jason Kahn, Eddie Prevost, Charles Hayward and Lol Coxhill amongst others. Over the course of the albums three tracks, the third of which is a recording of the duo's live performance at London's Cafe Oto in December 2008, Nos Phillipe interweave a myriad of claustrophobic atmospherics, detailed layered textures, shrill guitar distortions, decayed field recordings and harmonic tones and drones that conjure an ethereal and unsettling sonic environment. BBC Music Online "the two lay down a dark ambient texture of noise that swirls slowly around us, like an aural fog descending on our consciousness." The Sound Projector "the mood turns nightmarish, so much so that one imagines the unwitting explorers moving beyond the factory floor to a burning-hot torture chamber where eviscerated victims cling to life and wail in vain hope of rescue.
