Ill Conga/Funky Ghost Town

A 2 track funk single (5m 40s) — released June 30th 2008 on Breakin Bread

BREAKIN BREAD continue to push their brand of "DIRTY, BEATBREAKIN' FUNK AND HIP HOP" with the 2nd 7" from Ill Boogs Ill Boogs is one of the UK's top b-boys (breakdancers). He was one of the founding members of the Floor Science Crew and he went on to become a key member of the legendary Born To Rock and Sinstars Crews. The label first got to know Ill Boogs when he came down to the early Brixton club sessions held by the Breakin Bread crew (way back in 1998). Since then Ill Boogs has probably been to more Breakin Bread parties than any other b-boy in the UK and he's gained respect as one of the more stylish dancers in the UK. Boogs isn't about power moves, he keeps his uprock tight and his floorwork steady. As a result, it's completely natural that Ill Boogs' musical offerings are right up our street and his previous 7" (Gypsy Rock b/w The Grump) proved this with b-boy DJ's the world over going crazy over the breaks and giving it repeated spins. (from Skeme of the Rocksteady Crew in NYC to Z Trip in Los Angeles and DJ Woodo in Switzerland). Boogs himself describes his music as "the next step in experimentation…… beats firmly aimed at b-boys but with enough musicality to hold your interest when the break ends. It's not trying to be clever, it's just for people to dance to and real DJ's to play with". We certainly think so and hope you'll agree that Boogs' second offering is another tight funky/beatsy 7". You don't get many rhythm tracks like this these days but there's definitely an audience for this stuff….. Side A: King Conga As the title of the track suggests, this is a percussion driven tune, somewhere between a soul shaker and a soundtrack chase track. Heavy drums as you would expect from Ill Boogs with a driving bassline underpinning the groove. King Conga is punctuated with a simple funky horn riff and topped off with a live flute solo which brings the track to a climax Side B: Funky Ghost Town This is a straight up B-Boy tune. Made by a b-boy for b-boys. Funky but chilled out with a dirty, deep down sound which reminds us of the African funk movement of the 70's. The main drum break is programmed (its not a loop) and there are a few sneaky teaser breaks in there. One for the dancers to finesse their moves to rather than spaz out on the dancefloor.
