As we get ready to release our 10 year anniversary compilation cd, 'Version Excursion'(CRCD026), here's a little 7 ' vinyl taster from one of the UK's premier funk bands, Speedometer. Over the years, they have released a string of deep funk, Afro and Latin 7's on such labels as 'Soul Fire', 'Freestyle' and 'Blow It Hard'. Speedometer have also been in high demand as a backing band for US funk legends including Joe Quarterman, Eddie Bo, Marva Whitney, Lee Fields and Billy Wooten (for the launch of Counterpoint's 'Jazz Bizniz 3'). 'Wilderness' was originally recorded by South African jazz legend, Zacks Nkosi, in the mid 70's. It made it's first UK appearance on our 'Afrika Underground' (CRCD/LP015) compilation in 2002. In contrast to Nkosi's laid back version, Speedometer up the revs for a funk fuelled Afro beat floor shaker. 'Pt.1? kicks off with the signature bassline, followed rapidly by percussion and wah wah guitar as the horn section blow the theme. Look out for tasty little solos by bandleader, Leigh Gracie on guitar and Matt McKay on flute. 'Pt.2? fades in with Speedometer rhythm section at their raw best as the horns return to the theme and the tempo switches into an Afro beat rhythm. As the Afro percussion groove works up a sweat there's a nifty horn solo for an authentic Afro funk finale..'
