Insight

A 14 track electropop album (1h 7m 44s) — released June 5th 2006 on COUNTERPOINT RECORDS

Producer and vinyl obsessive David Borsu's musical journey has reached a milestone with the release of his debut album, 'Insight'. As a child of the 'fiery city' of Liege in Belgium, Borsu's musical influences mirror those of the diverse cultural aspects of this paradoxical metropolis. Situated at the crossroads of Northern and Southern Europe, Liege is a place where old meets new, and historical influences sit comfortably along side modern developments. As the opening track suggests, 'Insight' is a collection of 'records of varied character' which benefit not only from Borsu's understated production methods, but from some highly choice collaborations too. The lush, 40's style vocals of Damia Da Costa kick things off perfectly on 'Late Night Swing' and convey a more broken soul flavour on 'Syncopassion'; Olu Butterfly Woods delivers her own brand of politically charged 'urban juju poetry' on 'Mama Nature'; and Fertile Ground's leading lady Navasha Daya drops her trademark vocals on the electro-funk of 'Move'. Elsewhere splintered break beats combine with well-honed trumpet solos, sax riffs and dirty bass-lines. 'Nocturne' has a South American feel and features Billy Holiday style samples; 'Reminiscent' is steeped in a Placebo influenced fusion sound. 'Hosanna' is a gritty funk workout with gospel-tinged vocals; 'East Beaumont' takes its cue from afro and broken beat in equal measure; 'Mannequin Mankind' is a heavy, twisted dance floor bomb; 'Hustle The Funk' is a scratched up club killer; 'Coltrance' seems to be part LSD experiment and part Alice Coltrane tribute; and 'Way Of Life' comes off like a lost Maigret soundtrack. And after all that there are still the remixes of the single, 'Move', to shake your rump to courtesy of New Zealand's Mark de Clive-Lowe and Borsu himself.'

'The keynote here is variety. 'Insight' offers loping jazz, spacey chillers, electro funk, broken beats and much more besides.' - Blues & Soul

Insight' builds over 70 mins, as a dj should build a crowd. Make sure you don't miss out on this.' - Simon Harrison Basic Soul

'He's a clever fella is Mr Borsu. It shows his hand is placed firmly on his heart and a real taste for eclectic styles of music comes shinning thru as he dabbles with future jazz grooves, funk, latin to broken beats.' - Paul Gamblin Heavy Mannas

'Each track has real warmth & as a listening experience, the collection flows with effortless cool' 4/4 - Night Magazine

'Vivid proof that Belgium's got some talent as versatile as David Borsu.Danceable & intelligent' - Philharmoinx

'Borsu's cut n' paste style debut unleashes a dose of funky passion upon a sore head like a finger up the arse for a wake up call.' - Blowback magazine

'Insight' mirrors his origins with a blend of electronic break beats and beautifully recorded organic sounds... this is a really nice album bringing some of the more beautiful elements of jazz bang up to date and in an accessible format.8/10 - Hollywood Outline Magazine

alternative album of the month- 4 stars? - insight

David Borsu Insight (Counterpoint Records) Belgian producer Borsu has compiled the best of his recent EPs into his debut long player. 'Coltrance' fuses electronica with Jazz vibes and 'Late Night Swing' is mellower with a smoky vocal. Funkstrumentals 'Reminscent' and 'Hosanna' will get you moving, whilst 'Move' featuring the vocals of label-mate Navasha Daya takes it up a gear with a solid R&B workout. Its irresistible! Bonus mixes of the track by Mark De Clive Lowe and Bruckcell are also included taking the track futher into the electronic field. 'Mannequin Mankind' boasts some dirty bass beats and the next two tracks follow in the same vein with more breakbeat soul. Perfect late night listening for those that like their beats with a twist! - Sonic Destinations
