Different Drummer / Round Trip Mars Records are proud to present the debut album by top rocking combo Phase 5. Comprising of the four tracks from the popular vinyl only 'Space Bar EP' alongside three new doses of the P5 medicine as well as an exclusive re-model from German maestro Burnt Friedman (aka Nonplace Urban Field / B.F. & The Nu Dub Players etc). A heady mix-up of bossa nova, dancehall, exotica,hip-hop and just plain freaked out nonsense ensures the 'Space Bar' is a musical atmosphere like no other out of the Southern Hemisphere. The album kicks off with the frisky drums, melancholic flute melody and dub science of 'Realistic Biscuit', 'Easy Gargamel' drops into John Barry mode and manages to combine a great string arrangement with subtle guitar twangs and spycatcher theremin vibes. 'Skyland' takes the listener out of easy-listening chair and straight into the Kingston Dancehall, with its Studio One horns, ragga break and eerie horror bass. 'Bag Juice' revisits the bossa beats of 'Box Juice', and continues the Klaus Wunderlich meets George McCrae vibe of its predecessor. Burnt Friedman takes the whole thing underwater for some electronic skankin' with his mix of 'Mothman Skunk'. All in all this collection is good fun and rude in equal measures. Phase 5 is comprised of Auckland and elsewhere producer Angus McNaughton and DJ Stinky Jim. Formed after the dissolution of their previous outfit Unitone Hi Fi in '96, the duo were originally known as Soundproof. Under this moniker they recorded a highly successful remix for close and unlikely allies High Dependency Unit, as well as remixing Digidub and Levi Roots and contributing tracks ('Phasing Saddles' and 'Mothman Skank' respectively) to Different Drummer and Wreck This Mess compilations. The pair also began a series of infrequent and irregular gigs under this name starting off with an all-hands-to-deck debut appearance at the Gathering, a crowd-confusing national tour with HDU, and hometown sessions alongside the likes of Nonplace Urban Field, Pains People and Pitch Black. When an English band signed to a major emerged as 'Soundproof', P5 knew it was better to run rather than fight, and a new name was sought. Phase 5 emerged as prime contender in late '98, which is hardly surprising with the pair individually owning substantial collections of the mighty Phase 4, easy listening label. The groups own label Round Trip Mars soon followed with the release of the vinyl-only 'Space-Bar EP' in July '99 and a legendary release party at the Factory featuring brethrens in boom, Dooblong Tongdra and SJD. The 'Space Bar' EP has been played and supported by Coldcut, Kid Loco, Manasseh, The Orb, Nonplace, Digidub, Sons of Silence amongst others, as well as getting radio airplay from ABC in Australia, Radio Nova Paris to Radio One in England with most points in between. Phase 5 - rude spread.'

Different Drummer haul in yet another overseas recruit with the enlisting of Auckland producer Angus McNaughton. Angus and his partner DJ Stink Jim aka Phase 5 have been running around since the mid 90's, concocting various musical ensembles and constantly adding to and nuturuing their prized phase 4 record collections.Although most of the eight album tracks ar of danceable proportions, the kaleidascope quirkiness of the easy listening fraternity is paramount to the overall vibe of the album. The album keeps the momentum going with an all-encompassing spectrum of dub, funk, psychedelia and trippy instrumentals.. One second you've got John Barry raising his dramatic head, the next you've got the slender, hip twisting bossa nova styklles of the Blackpool Tower Ballroom. Perfect backroom/bedroom material. - Andy Thomas Seven
