Love She Wants

Earnest Endeavours

Released: 17th September 2012 | 7 track alternative rap/hip-hop ep

The Love She Wants EP provides an entertaining introduction to The Insomniax; two talented brothers from South-London making hip-hop with a cerebral strut. The Insomniax are Kai Gama (Mark Anderson) and Dr Sydney Velvet or just plain DSV (James Anderson). Together the multi-talented pair handle singing, songwriting, rapping, production and instrumentation throughout the Love She Wants EP.

Alternating between poetic, dreamy rapping and soulful singing, their evocative lyrics capture detailed snapshots of moments in time, whilst musically the material reaches out beyond its hip-hop foundations to touch on dub, bashment and electronic soul. The siblings share a background in London's vibrant spoken word scene, and in terms of musical lineage, might possibly be regarded as not too distant cousins of Ghostpoet, SBTRKT, Tricky or Dels.

Born out of a screenplay written by Kai Gama, and with the theme of needing to be loved at it's heart, the Love She Wants EP follows the narrative of a girl's journey searching for love. Weekend-starter Friday Comes opens proceedings and features Roses Gabor; a fellow South Londoner who's also provided vocal for Gorillaz's Dare and SBTRKT's Pharaohs. Next up are the delightful, dreamy Oh She Falls and Love She Wants, with the title track describing the excitement of falling in love with the standout simile like running barefoot on a shit free lawn. Quirky, oddly funky Columbo Love turns up the heat, and the electro-soul of A Vibe For Chrissy and Gil Scott-Heron-esque Atonement follow. The net result is a sterling showcase of The Insomniax sound.
