Healing Atmospheres

A 6 track ambient ep (1h 4m 17s) — released January 29th 2007 on Earthwind Arts

Healing Atmospheres... Calm yet abstract, involving and hypnotic textures. Sound Healing- look away now. One way to approach Sound healing is as a kind of context-making. Making a psychological space where people somehow get themselves well. A lot of healing seems to work this way. The well-known placebo effect points to it as a modality and so do the scientific studies of other therapys such as homeopathy. One study after another decisively concludes that this or that therapy has no clinical effect, yet the patients continue to get well, (so long as they are not taking part in a study). There may be more to sound healing than I know and a lot of very clever people have interesting theories about it. The work of Hans Jenny is well worth looking into, and from the other end of time Pythagoras has a lot to say on the subject, as, interestingly, does Brian Eno- "I remember seeing a thing on TV years ago. An Indonesian shaman was treating sick people by apparently reaching into their bodies and pulling out bloody rags which he claimed were the cause of their disease. It all took place in dim light, in smoky huts, after intense incantations. A Western team filmed him with infrared cameras and, of course, were able to show that he was performing a conjuring trick. He wasn't taking anything out of their bodies after all. So he was a fake, no? Well, maybe-- but his patients kept getting better. He was healing by context-- making a psychological space where people somehow got themselves well. The rag was just a prop." (The WIRE, Dec/Jan 1993, part of an essay about Miles Davis)
