Having supported The Streets, Public Enemy, Xzibit and Gangstarr and with last year’s victorious Electric Picnic appearance behind them, intelligent Irish HipHop duo Messiah J & The Expert begin their assault on the UK’s consciousness with their album, Now This I Have To Hear, released in the UK on June 4. In the three years since their debut album, What’s Confusing You, Messiah J & The Expert have won Best Dance Act in the Hot Press Readers Poll, twice, and have been nominated for both the Meteor and Choice Music Awards. During that time, they’ve refined and re-invented their sound, creating tunes that borrow as much from other genres of music as from hip-hop. MJEX fuse old, jazzy sounding samples with warm, welcoming guitars and buckets of squelchy synths. Consequently, they’ve become a favourite of Steve Lamacq who invited them in for a live session and who has just profiled them on air as one of his hottest acts at SXSW this year. Messiah J & The Expert are influenced by everything from Basement Jaxx to The Smiths to DJ Shadow with a bit of Motown thrown into the mix. Whilst Messiah J takes care of all the word related elements, The Expert formulates the music from a variety of gadgets and gizmos. Their brand of HipHop is refreshingly bull free, the no irritating skits, no boring braggadocio, no tinny 808 beats. Instead, there are choirs, there are accordions, there are songs about old age and teenage discos. Two twenty-something men finding their way in the world and questioning what they see and hear. But with lots of thumping drums. Almost uniquely for a ‘hiphop’ act, Messiah J & The Expert treat their audiences as intelligent beings who want more than clichés and stereotypes. MJEX provide sharp lyrics and clever beats - music for the head and the hips. Having already made a huge impact in their native Ireland, and with UK artists such as Arctic Monkeys, Lily Allen and Plan B all successfully offering up similarly smart pop nuggets, the time for Messiah J & The Expert to cross to these shores is undoubtedly now. The MJEX masterplan continues: to create something totally new out of everything that's ever come before. Messiah J & The Expert are not just unlike any other band in Ireland. They're now unlike any other band. Something truly special.
