Back Then (feat. Phil Campbell & Laurence Colbert)

A 5 track folk revival ep (20m 37s) — released May 23rd 2011 on Les Cousins

When it was played on XFM all those years ago; Claire Sturgess described "All Those Years" as having "More Balls than Starsailor". Hmmm. In 2011 that doesn't mean much. Recorded 2001-2002 at Metropolis Studios "Back Then" guests songwriter and piano player Phil Campbell and Loz Colbert from RIDE. Influenced at that time by the Verve the songs are written by Mark Pavey after he left University and finding himself in London; in the middle of a massive boom whilst struggling financially as an unknown singer-songwriter having given up a good job in the City as an Absinthe salesman. The songs have a certain pathos born out of relative poverty whilst keeping up appearances that resulted in an EP that sounded seriously out of step with the good times everybody else was experiencing. Fast forward a decade and the music sounds surprisingly fresh and in keeping with the more grounded circumstances of the economy. Try it; you might like it.
