What The Deal? (feat. Phife Dawg)
A 2 track jazz rap/hip-hop single (7m 49s) — released January 1st 2006 on Pantone
Pantone Music is pleased to announce the launch of a series of funky little 7-inches dedicated to hip-hop and lo-fi soul. To begin this series "What Da Deal" presents bass beats and sombre jazz piano lines from Bun featuring the hip hop legend Phife Dawg. As a member of A Tribe Called Quest, Phife Dawg was part of the most intelligent and artistic cross-cultural rap group of the 90s. With insightful lyrics they inspired a generation of emcees, created the hip-hop alternative to hardcore and gangsta rap, played to sold-out 20,000 capacity arenas and collected a stack of platinum/gold discs. As a bona-fide musical innovator Phife Dawg has thus earned a following of fans across all generations from continent to continent.
On the B-Side, "30 Guns of Bun" dissonant piano stabs, bursting beats and eerie interludes intertwine as Bun releases his darker side with bleak jazzy soundscapes reminiscent of Bernard Herrmann's 1976 Taxi Driver score.
