My Fantoms

A 12 track pop album (41m ) — released June 6th 2011 on Proper Songs

"My Fantoms" is a record of heart-melting beauty. With a collection of 60s and 70s analogue sounds, textile synths and carpeted spongey drum machines, Hong Kong in The 60s present their vision of song, reminding us of forgotten sounds like The Passage, Young Marble Giants and Robert Wyatt, as well as the debt we all owe gentle pop. The melodies are sung with the perfect balance of honesty and control... the control is so welcome. This record is with me a lot. It's fresh, new but familiar. I love this.

'My Fantoms' is the debut album by Hong Kong In The 60s, released 2nd May 2011 through Proper Songs. Influenced by early electronic pop, 1960s Chinese music and European film soundtracks, the 12 tracks include bittersweet pop songs, dreamlike instrumentals and even excerpts from a mouse opera for children.

Hong Kong In The 60s are Mei Yau Kan, Christopher Greenberg and Tim Scullion, a multilingual three-piece who formed in London in 2007. The group democratically share songwriting, singing and performing duties. Tim and Mei Yau met at school in Berkshire and the band came together, years later, after Christopher and Mei Yau chanced upon each other while working as librarians at Oxford University.

The trio released their debut EP 'Willow Pattern Songs' in June 2009, and won new fans at that year's Indietracks festival. Author Warren Ellis described their 2010 follow-up EP 'Places' as "a charming summoning with a weird sheen of degraded international glamour".

July 2010 saw the release of Seasons and Cycles, a collaborative 7′ single with The Advisory Circle on the esteemed Ghost Box label. Advisory Circle main-man Jon Brooks also remixed 'Disintegration' for the 'Places' EP and has mastered 'My Fantoms'.

Over the last year, Hong Kong In The 60s have performed live with artists such as Hype Williams, Still Corners, Position Normal, Design A Wave, Fuzzy Lights and Je Suis Animal. Their music has been played on BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music, Resonance FM, WFMU, Triple R, RTE and many other radio stations throughout the world.
