“Samba Makossa†is a journey through the soul of Brazil, but it’s also the singer’s exciting encounter with Europe. Swinging samba and afro music meet the 70’s with heavy drums, electric pianos and funky guitars. There is the electro-samba “Meio de campoâ€, and Jorge Benjor’s football funk-anthem “Umbabaraumaâ€. The title track, Chico Science’s “Samba Makossaâ€, is a wild futuristic maracatu, on which Simone commands her Portuguese rap phrases in between the blows of the horn section. And on “Toleranciaâ€, Simone is joined by rapper genius Timbuktu! With a solo career spanning ten years, Simone Moreno has become one of the great ambassadors of Brazilian music. She was born in Salvador, Bahia, and an interest for music was evoked very early. At only 17, she was singing from the heights of the trio-eléctrico groups throughout Salvador, and she recorded - together with the group Novos Barbaros - the success "A terra tremeu", which started as a theme for a famous carnival troup of the city, but ended up as a hit all over Brazil.

Full of sophisticated grooves & memorable tunes, you;ll be wanting to add this to your collection of Brazilian sounds. 4/5 - Paul Sullivan DJ
