GUITAR-BOY SUPERSTAR

A 19 track africa album (1h 14m 55s) — released July 21st 2008 on Soundway Records Ltd

One of the true enigmas of the Nigerian Music scene, Sir Victor Uwaifo has been an instantly recognisable figure throughout his five decades in the music industry. He built his first guitar aged 12 and went on to be awarded Africa's first gold disc in 1967. His incessant energy have seen him record countless LP's and singles and become one of Nigeria's true superstars. A musician, poet, philosopher, sculptor, painter, ambassador and recently Minister for Culture, he has carved a unique place for himself in the history of African Music. From the mid 60s to the early 80s, he was one of Nigeria's most popular music stars, producing the huge smash 'Joromi' – the biggest ever selling record in Africa and recipient of Africa's first Gold Disc – as well as many other hits. It would have been hard to escape Victor's exuberant presence on the radio and jukeboxes of Nigeria and West Africa at the time, not forgetting his extraordinary stage shows and outlandish costumes. This compilation focuses on his 'Ekassa' period in the first half of the 1970's. These recordings were made after his return from Lagos to his home town of Benin City in Edo State at the start of the new decade. Uwaifo mixed the ancient culture of the Benin Obas with highlife and a dash of rock and soul to form his new style. Amazingly many of these cuts have remained unavailable since then...until now. "Another excellent dollop of Nigerian guitar from the ever-reliable Soundway label.... a constant and inventive delight" - The Guardian "Nobody ever played guitar quite like him" - Mojo "A joyful trove" **** - Uncut "Just the job for lovers of ducking and diving African guitars - Q "If you think Nigerian music begins and ends with Fela Kuti or Sunny Ade ...think again" - Oxford Times
