Pianist/programmer Craig Taborn is one of the younger generation of jazz musicians hitching onto hip-hop and DJ culture. Follow up to Taborn's 2001 solo album Light Made Lighter, recorded for Thirsty Ears Blue Series. The musicians he has assembled for the album are no less exciting: drummer David King of the Bad Plus, revered violist Mat Maneri, and tenor saxophonist Aaron Stewart, who has worked with Anthony Braxton and Steve Coleman. He incorporates elements of Detroit techno, abstract laptop electronica, breakbeat-influenced cut-up drum programming, mysterious ambience and, of course, masterful free jazz. Embracing the same discipline used by Sun Ra or Larry Young, Taborn exploits his instrument to see what they can do for him. Explores the touchstone for his digital space jazz, which also co-opts Detroit techno and dance beats. Taborn creates complex arrangements that combine elements of electronica, trip hop and jazz fusion but even the busiest tracks have a hook or clear melody to hang onto.
