Originally released on two different 7' singles on the sought after 'Lulu' label out of Indianapolis, Indiana, here they are again, back to back on one 7'! The Rhythm Machine was formed by James Boone and James Brantley after they had left the Highlighters Band in 1970. (well known for their deep funk classic 'The Funky 16 Corners '). The new band was extremely hot and that's why they were always on the road and not often in the recording studio. 'The kick' was one of three 45rpm singles they have ever recorded, the one we at Tramp Records like most. Spider Harrison was probably Indianapolis? first soul DJ in the late 60s. In 1970, Jerry Herman, founder of Lulu Records, offered him to record a 7' single. Harrison accepted and recorded 'Beautiful day' backed by the Highlighters? rhythm section. He thought 'Beautiful day' was going to be a big hit, because he knew that Sly Stone, Percy Sledge and also BB King were DJs before they had Hit records. Unfortunately this was not the case. His composition remained relatively unknown until he has been tracked down in late 2000. He has been told that his recording is totally in demand in todays deep funk circles and more than 35 years later it gets the attention it deserves. Both tunes appeared first in 2001 on the excellent 'Funky 16 Corners' compilation from Stones Throw Records. While 'The kick' turns up occasionally, the original 45 single of 'Beautiful day' is nearly impossible to find and justifies alone this reissue.'
