Brooklyn's hardest working afro-beat collective are back with a new LP to follow the success of last years 'Liberation Afro-Beat Volume 1... Spanish for 'Bulletproof' (literally 'Anti-bullets'), Antibalas are the next generation of afro-beat in the tradition of the Black President, Fela Kuti. This fifteen plus piece band hits hard with the left and then the right: monstrous horns and bass are layered over funky polyrhythmic beats and breaks - furious lyrics challenge and attack the dehumanising capitalist system and incite insurrection in English, Yoruba, and Spanish. Antibalas formed in May 1998 from members of Desco Records' Soul Providers and the Daktaris. They were quickly joined by like-minded New York musicians active in the worlds of jazz, rock, improvised music, and traditional drumming from Cuba and Brazil. This union of Latinos, whites, African-Americans, Africans and Asian-Americans is based in Brooklyn, NYC. Although this is their 2nd record for Ninja Tune, it's the first that will be receiving full marketing attention and support. Their debut album 'Liberation Afro-Beat Volume 1? (NJT56) had already been out on their own label for quite some time by the time it was re-issued to a positive press reaction. Although the first album is excellent, this new one really demonstrates what playing a show every week for two years does for the tightness of a band. Watch for their appearance on the Red Hot & Riot compilation in the spring, a tribute to Fela Kuti being put out by the Red Hot Organisation where Antibalas & Baaba Maal team up for a version of 'Trouble Sleep'. The cover is being designed by Ghariokwu Lemi, who was responsible for designing the majority of records that Fela Kuti released.'
