There's a very famous and possibly completely made up anecdote about when Bootsy Collins was in James Brown's band. Apparently, the man was so monged out that when he looked down at his bass guitar he thought it had turned into a python that was savaging him. He collapsed to the floor screaming, trying to push the thing away from him. He got fired. The point? Well, Pest are the python. That's to say, you could spend a day writing carefully and intelligently about the group's magpie intelligence, their musicianship, their production nous, their range of influences, but at the end of the day 'Necessary Measures' is still going to sound like you're being strangled by a giant psychedelic funk snake. Which can only be a good thing. Expect: ridiculous bass, a low attention threshhold, George Benson being murdered by men with big sticks, huge bass, drill & bass reworked as bass & bass, cartoon music made psycho-nasty, garage rock into UK garage. You could point to the Blockheads or Tackhead (why is it always 'Heads') but this is a band that genuinely sounds unlike any other you've ever heard: or like the greatest, most fucked up UK punk 'funk' band since? ever? Don't expect: any arty-farty nonsense, knowing winks, to have time to get bored. You know you need it. Stop playing. Come in.'
